Haight Street Parking Argument

i totally would have started to slowly back into that space. when moving car vs person, car usually wins. i dunno, i'm mean like that.

No way, it's first come, first served. Cracker Hobo was in the space first. It's his whether he has a car or just wants to sunbathe in a lounge chair (a lá Bosom Buddies). This goes double if he put money in the meter.

Yes, first vehicle come, first vehicle served. Pedestrians must yield to vehicles when they are on the road:

From 2006 California Drivers Handbook, p. 78:

PEDESTRIAN
RESPONSIBILITIES

Yield the right-of-way to vehicles when you:

• Cross or walk where intersections or crosswalks are not marked. green or “WALK” for you, look

• “Jaywalk” across a street between intersections, where no pedestrian crosswalks are provided.

Remember: Making eye contact with the driver does not mean that the driver will see you or yield the right of way.

Do not suddenly leave a curb or other safe place and walk or run into the path of a vehicle close enough to be a danger to you.

This is true even though you are in a crosswalk. The law states that drivers must take care for the safety of any pedestrian— but if the driver can’t stop in time to avoid hitting you, the law won’t help you.

hobo cracker put money in the meter -- and on a free-parking sunday?

[this is good]

Is parking that hard to come by there? What a stupid thing to cause such a scene over.

[this is good]

No, Liz, the hippie did not put money in the meter. I said that it goes double *IF* he puts money in the meter.

That law you quoted seems more to address right of way, as opposed to crackheads saving a spot for their hippie bus house.

And no, Patty, parking is not that bad at all, not even in my neighborhood. You just have to be a little persistent sometimes.

If if the truck had "won", I suspect it would have been temporary - returning to key scratches and/or smashed windows.
